Officially known as Paedophryne amauensis, the world’s smallest frog was discovered by Professor Chris Austin of Louisiana State University on a three-month field trip to Papua New Guinea. It was named Paedophryne amauensis because the frog was found near the small village of Amau living among fallen and rotting leaves on the forest floor. According to Austin, it is beloved the frog evolved to its present size to fill a hole in the food chain, eating tiny mites and insects that would not have sustained larger creatures.
