Washington Gay Marriage: Senate Sends Same Sex Marriage Bill to House For Approval
With a packed gallery watching the proceedings on the floor, and later cheering the outcome, state Senators got Washington on the way to becoming the seventh state in the USA to legalize same-sex marriages. Several senators crossed party lines – four Republicans voted with the Democrats for the passing of the bill while three Democrats voted against it – and there was heated debate on the floor. But in the end, the pros had it.
Though the Washington gay marriage bill is expected to be passed in the House and signed by the governor into law, its existence will come under threat almost immediately. Critics of the bill have vowed to stop its implementation via a referendum. To do this, they must collect at least 120,577 signatures by June 6. If they fail to do this, gay and lesbian couple will be allowed to marry starting June.
