VIDEO: USA Wins Men’s 4×400 Relay at 2011 IAAF Worlds
It was not an easy win for the American men as Jamaica led most of the way during the race. South Africa also gave the US relay team a hard time as it ran second to the Jamaicans. It was not until after the final corner of the last leg of the 4×400 (the last 100 meters) that the Americans took the lead as LaShawn Merritt went to the outside lane to overtake South Africa and Jamaica’s fading anchor leg runner.
Double amputee Oscar Pistorius of South Africa was not in the final 4×400 relay team. However, he will still receive a silver medal, the highest achieved by a handicapped athlete at the World Championships, because he ran in the heats.
