In the middle of this controversy is June Shannon, a mom to a Toddlers & Tiaras favorite – 6 year old Alana Thompson, aka Honey Boo Boo Child. In last month’s episode of the show, June Shannon described how she boosted Honey Boo Boo Child’s energy in the competition with Pixy Stix and ‘Go-Go- Juice’, a mixture of Red Bull and Mountain Dew. A public outcry ensued and now, June Shannon is defending her actions.
“There are normal people who give their kids this. Why is it such a big issue with us pageant moms that do it all weekend to keep our kids energized and awake? There are far worse things… I could be giving her alcohol.”
Shannon explained that at typical pageant day can be exhausting to a child, and parents have to find ways to keep them energized throughout the competition. Otherwise, the child will surely lose.
“A pageant day can last from 7 in the morning to 6,7,8,9, 10 at night, so performing and getting a kid up that early and lasting all day without a rest, you have to energize their body,” said June Shannon. “Everybody does it.”
The fact that ‘everybody does it’ still doesn’t make it right. Energy drinks are bad for kids. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children exposed to high levels of caffeine run the risk of cardiovascular and neurological problems later in life. With such findings, isn’t there a law these mothers are violating for doing these to their children? Isn’t this child abuse?
