Two hours after the hacking occurred, the malicious Obama message was still present in the Fox News Politics Twitter account. Together with it were two other messages: “Just regained full access to our Twitter and email. Happy 4th.” and “@BarackObama has just passed. The President is dead.”
This is the latest hacking incident of a high profile site. Previous hacks involved to other groups which became notorious for their online activities – Anonymous and LulzSec. It is not known if The Script Kiddies is related in any way to the other hacking groups aforementioned. This is also the second time that a Fox site has been hacked. An attack on another Fox Entertainment Group website, Fox.com was the first confirmed hit by hacker group Lulz Security in May 2011. In that incident, LuzSec reportedly stole the personal details of 73,000 applicants for the US version of The X Factor.
The White House has not issued a statement on the matter as of this writing.
UPDATE: FOX News has posted the following statement on the hacking:
FoxNews.com’s Twitter feed for political news, FoxNewspolitics, was hacked early Monday morning.
Hackers sent out several malicious and false tweets claiming that President Obama had been assassinated. Those reports are incorrect, of course, and the president is spending the July 4 holiday with his family.
The hacking is being investigated, and FoxNews.com regrets any distress the false tweets may have created.
