The Swedes were one of the favorites to win the tournament and looked headed to do so early in the championship. But a disappointing loss to Japan derailed Sweden’s quest for the Women’s World Cup 2011 title. It’s not all disappointment, though. As the top two European teams in the tournament along with France, Sweden received an automatic slot in next year’s 2012 London Olympics.
Marie Hammarstrom was the hero of match from Sweden. Hammarstrom scored the decisive goal in the 82nd minute after a tense and gritty game. With the score tied at 1-1, Hammarstrom faked a defender to score a goal with the ball that was already cleared by France from Sweeden’s corner kick. (CREDIT: FIFA/YouTube)
