Steve Williams received the mock award, ‘Celebration of the Year’ for his controversial interview after Adam Scott won the Bridgestone Invitational. Williams was then the new caddie of Scott after he was dropped by Tiger Woods. In the interview, Steve Williams it was “the best win of his life,” despite being with Tiger Woods in 13 major wins.
“It was my aim to shove it right up that black a——,” said Steve Williams of that interview. That comment immediately raised eyebrows. Despite being an off-the-record affair, Steve Williams found that his remark made it to the tabloids the next day. He issued the following apology.
“I apologize for comments I made last night at the Annual Caddy Awards dinner in Shanghai,” it said. “Players and caddies look forward to this evening all year, and the spirit is always joking and fun. I now realize how my comments could be construed as racist. However, I assure you that was not my intent. I sincerely apologize to Tiger and anyone else I’ve offended.”
Tiger Woods was not present in Shanghai. Woods reportedly found out about Steve Williams’ remark after several players present in Shanghai notified him of the incident. He has made no comment so far. However, his agent, Mark Steinberg, made the following statement to The Associated Press:
“I was with Tiger last night when he heard the news. We got multiple calls from people who sounded like they were leaving the caddie party. Tiger obviously wasn’t there. He doesn’t know exactly what was said. But if multiple reports – which all seem to be accurate – are true, then it’s sad it’s come down to this. It’s a regrettable comment, and there’s really nothing that Tiger can do or say. He’s just going to move on.”
Steve Williams said it was a joke that no one should have taken seriously. Do you think Williams was right?
