According to the Starbucks announcement, “…all Starbucks stores nationwide will be smoke-free. All previously designated outside smoking areas will be converted to non-smoking.” That’s the kicker right there, the last statement.
So what does a coffee addict smoker do? Well, there’s still Seattle’s Best, Coffee Bean and all the other coffee joints out there which still have smoking areas. Or you can just order take-out if it’s Starbucks you really want.
BTW, some smokers are challenging the new Starbucks stand on smoking. They say that even Republic Act 9211 says smoking is allowed in designated smoking areas in restaurants. So how come Starbucks made their stores smoke-free? Well, they answer to that is prerogative. Starbucks Philippines obviously chose another path in implementing the no smoking campaign of the government. It may mean losing some of their more loyal customers but that’s their prerogative.
Posted below is Section 5 of Republic Act 9211 for those who are unfamiliar with the ordinance:
Smoking shall be absolutely prohibited in the following public places:
a. Centers of youth activity such as playschools, preparatory schools, elementary schools, high schools, colleges and universities, youth hostels, and recreational facilities for persons under eighteen (18) years old;
b. Elevator and stairwells;
c. Location in which fire hazards are present, including gas stations and storage areas for flammable liquids, gas, explosives or combustible materials;
d. Within the buildings and premises of public and private hospitals. Medical, dental, and optical clinics, health centers, nursing homes, dispensaries and laboratories;
e. Public conveyance and public facilities including airport and ship terminals and train and bus stations, restaurant and conference halls, except for separate smoking areas; and
f. Food preparation areas.

Yes, people are smoking again at Starbucks!
Haha they gave up
Starbucks doesn’t care about the smoking law.
Now I see tables with people smoking outside again. Starbucks just thinks about profit like other company in Philippines.
If they have banned smoking then why do they have tables with signs saying “reserved for smokers” outside the shop at Rockwell Power Plant ? I was there last week and saw at least 5-6 smokers sitting at Starbucks tables next to the non-smokers. I guess money is more important to Starbucks so they just change the policy.
Good luck na lang sa starbucks. I know that 70% of their customers are customers. Wrong move in my opinion. It could have been better if they just designate a smoking area for their customers.
oh well i always went to starbucks for coffee and cigarette. goodluck starbucks.
whoa!!!! are they for real??? smoking and smokers are two of the reasons why they have regular customers
Patay. sarap pa naman mag yosi sa Starbucks. Sosi!
