Juan Martin Del Potro opened strongly against the world number two. Del Potro broke Rafael Nadal in the first set several times to claim the set 6-1. But Rafael Nadal is not a six-time French Open champion for nothing. Playing on clay and with a full-house of Spanish fans cheering for him, including King Juan Carlos, Rafael Nadal came back with a vengeance.
Nadal turned the match around. Nadal broke del Potro’s serve late in the second set to level the match, and then he dominated the third set. In the fourth, Rafael Nadal broke early and all seemed lost for Argentina. However, Del Potro made his own comeback and took the fourth set to e tie-break. This time, Rafael Nadal was ready for him and blanked the Argentine 7-0.
“We gave everything, it was a very emotional victory at the end of a tough year,” said Rafael Nadal. “Winning in this way, we are very grateful to all the people of Spain. It was the best atmosphere I have experienced in my career.”
The win also also extends Rafael Nadal’s singles winning streak to 21 matches. Nadal has not lost a singles match in Davis Cup competition since 2004 against Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic. (VIDEO CREDIT: YouTube)
