Sinag Pilipinas Beats Malaysia, Reaches Finals: 2011 SEA Games
It was not an easy win for the Philippines. Don’t let the score fool you. Though Sinag Pilipinas won by 29 points, it was touch and go for the young Filipinos in the early part of the game. It was only in the closing minutes that the Pinoys were able to pull away.
Malaysia kept it close in the first half with gutsy play from its wards and the scoring prowess of Batumalai. The first half ended with the Pinoys in the lead by only three points at 44-41. At the start of the second half, the pace was the same. What changed the game for the Philippines was its pressure defense coupled with a trademark running game that finally broke the back of the Malaysians.
Slaughter topscored for the Philippines with 16 points. Hodge added 12, while Garcia chipped in 11.
Meanwhile, it was heartbreak for Sinag Pilipinas’ female counterpart. Known as Discover Perlas ng Pilipinas, the cagebelles absorbed a 73-75 heartbreak in overtime against Indonesia and lost the chance to fight for the gold. Discover Perlas will try to salvage the silver medal in women’s basketball this Sunday.
