The announcement is another huge triumph for the call to ban shark fin soup and other shark fin delicacies in restaurants. Earlier this year, Chinese basketball star Yao Ming threw his support for the banning shark fin. Another Asian hotel group, the Peninsula Hotel group, announced it would remove shark fin from the menu starting January 1 in recognition of the threat to global shark numbers.
The shark fin trade is one of the main reasons for the decline in shark populations around the globe. The delicacy is huge among Chinese and people of Chinese descent all over the world. But experts point out that Hong Kong is one of its biggest consumers. It not in restaurant, many Chinese buy shark fin from specialty shops and cook it at home.
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, based in Hong Kong, operates 72 facilities around the world.
