Stosur Upsets Serena Williams in US Open Final 2011 (VIDEO)
Will Serena Williams complete her comeback with a US Open 2011 victory? Serena Williams faces Samantha Stosur of Australia in the 2011 US Open women’s final as the last Grand Slam tournament draws to a close. The men’s final will be played tomorrow, Monday, with Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal disputing the crown.
Who will prevail? Serena Williams or Sam Stosur? The odds are definitely on Serena’s side, she with multiple Grand Slam victories under her belt. Add to that a powerful game that has helped her come back from a year off due to injury and medical problems. No one in women’s tennis can seem to stop Serena, not even world number 1 Caroline Wozniacki whom she disposed in the semifinal. From the looks of it, Williams will win this final.
However, stranger things have happened in tennis. Samantha Stosur is by no means out of it. Serena has the tendency to implode under pressure and Stosur should be aware of this. She should keep the pressure on with a consistent game that has taken her this far in the tournament and wait for Serena to commit mistakes.
Though I’m a fan of Serena Williams, I am going for Samantha Stosur in the US Open final. Serena has won many grand slam tournaments in her career. And, even if she loses here, she has already given notice to one and all that she is back. Samantha Stosur, on the other hand, may not get another opportunity to win a grand slam title. Let’s give this one to her.
UPDATE: Serena Williams has lost the US Open finals 2011. Samantha Stosur claimed her first Grand Slam tournament win by defeating the 13-time champion in the finals a couple of hours ago. Williams lost her cool on the umpire after she was penalized for celebrating a point too early and could not recover her focus on the match.
Just as predicted, Serena Williams’ tendency to implode cost her the match and the title. It was a good thing Sam Stosur kept her cool and her focus and took advantage of Serena’s mental vulnerability.
