After losing the fist set of a more focused and steady Sam Stosur, Serena Williams was visibly under pressure. Trying to get back into the match she was expected to win handily, Williams was playing aggressively at the start of the second set. Tied at 0-0 but trailing 30-40 in the game, Williams hit what appeared to be a winner to Stosur’s backhand. But before the ball could reach the Australian, Williams yelled in celebration – a violation of tennis rules.
The chair umpire called for a penalty and awarded the game to Stosur. That’s when Serena lost it, again. Are you the one who screwed me over last time?” she said. “Yeah, you are.” For the record, it was a different umpire she was referring to. She continued rant in the changeover.
“If you ever see me walking down the hall, look the other way, because you’re out of control… You’re totally out of control, you’re a hater, and you’re unattractive inside. Who would do such a thing? And I never complain. Wow… We’re in America last I checked. Can I get a water or am I gonna get violated for a water? Really, don’t even look at me! I promise you, don’t look at me, ’cause I am not the one. Don’t look my way.”
Serena bounced back and broke back, leveling the second set at 1-1. But Stosur kept her composure through it all and eventually won the match, a huge upset victory for the Australian.
I love Serena Williams. But this was another thing that shouldn’t have happened. It was an obvious violation of the rules. Even Stosur was surprised (pissed?) at what happened during that contested point. The chair umpire was right in penalizing her. Obviously, Serena needs more lessons in humility.
