Serena Williams was back in the US Open semifinals for the first time since 2009 when she got called for a foot fault against Kim Clijsters, then went on a tirade against the referee that cost her match point. That incident was one of the ugliest in the US Open and something Serena would choose to forget. This was also her first Grand Slam semifinal after a year off due to a freak injury and medical problems. But while the match while the match between the two most dominant players on tour was highly anticipated, it failed to deliver.
Williams’ power was just too much for Caroline Wozniacki last night. Serena came up with winner after winner while Wozniacki’s vaunted persistence and hardy play failed to neutralize the American’s game.
This loss will certainly not help Wozniacki’s fight against critics who continue to question her number 1 ranking depsite the absence of a Grand Slam victory. But then again, with the way Serena Williams is coming back from a lay-off, Wozniacki may not hold the top ranking for long. (VIDEO CREDIT: YouTube/EuroSport)
