Sarah McKinley told ABC News that a man claiming to be a neighbor went to their house the day after her husband’s funeral saying he wanted to say hello. McKinley did not let the man, Justin Martin, in. However, Marin returned on New Year’s Eve together with another man, Dustin Stewart, and tried to gain entry into the house.
That was when Sarah McKinley said she got her 12-gauge shotgun and her pistol from her bedroom to prepare for the worst. As the two men tried every door to gain entry, McKinley prepared her guns and called 911. She asked the dispatcher if it would be okay to shoot.
“I’ve got two guns in my hand — is it okay to shoot him if he comes in this door?” McKinley asked. “I’m here by myself with my infant baby, can I please get a dispatcher out here immediately?”
“I can’t tell you that you can do that but you do what you have to do to protect your baby,” said the dispatcher over the phone.
But when Martin kicked the door open and went for McKinley with a knife, she had no choice but to shoot and kill him. Police authorities later ruled the killing was justified.
“You’re allowed to shoot an unauthorized person that is in your home. The law provides you the remedy, and sanctions the use of deadly force,” Det. Dan Huff said. (via ABC/Good Morning America)
