“Seven passengers were impacted, four of them were taken to hospital on arrival in Singapore. They’ve all since been discharged and cleared to fly,” said a Qantas spokesperson. “The aircraft was assessed, there’s no damage and it’s scheduled to arrive (in Sydney) at 9 o’clock this evening.”
According to the statement, the injuries were mostly bruising caused because the passengers were out of their seats when it experience turbulence. The seat belt warning was immediately posted when the plane hit turbulence but some passengers were still standing or still on the way to their seats when the incident happened. Qantas said the turbulence was the result of severe thunderstorms over the Indian Ocean, in Indian airspace, three hours before the jet was due to land in Singapore for refueling before heading to its final destination in Australia.
This is the latest in a string of bad luck for the Australian airline. Another Qantas A380 plane suffered a mid-air engine explosion after take-off from Singapore in November 2010. The plane landed safely. And just this week, an announcement was made that several A380s in operation by airlines to have had small cracks on their wings. Both Airbus and the carriers said there was no safety issue.
