Karlo Maquinto was knocked down twice during that fight. But in true Karlo Maquinto fashion, he fought back and salvaged a draw. He collapsed on the canvass right after the decision was announced. According to his doctors, his brain had swollen and a brain scan revealed a blood clot has pushed the right side of his brain to the left resulting in a coma. He was pronounced brain dead last Wednesday.
His manager, Anson Tiu Co, said Maquinto had passed all tests before the bout and all precautionary measures were taken. During the fight, Maquinto was constantly asked asked if he was feeling well, especially after his two knockdowns, but the fighter always replied in the affirmative. However, they noticed that Karlo had almost stopped fighting towards the end of the last round. This was contrary to his style as he would always end a bout in a flurry of punches. He must have been feeling bad already by then but still continued to fight for the sake of his family for whom he was trying to earn a living through boxing.
As news of Karlo Maquinto’s death spread, Manny Pacquiao’s camp said the Filipino champion will be extending assistance to the family of his fellow boxer. (VIDEO CREDIT: GMA News)
