Its the first time the two teams met since the Philippine Azkals upset the Vietnamese during the AFF Suzuki Cup last year. And it looked like the Philippines was on its way to another upset after a late first-half goal from Manny Ott. However, that turned out to be the only goal the Azkals would score as the Vitenamese team was more than ready for them this time.
The second half saw Vietnam pressuring the Philippine Azkals no ends. And their defense yielded results after an accidental header from Matthew Hartmann leveled the score to 1-1. That was a big blow to the Filipinos who never seemed to recover from that shock. The Vietnamese continued to apply pressure to their game as well as producing a strong offense to defeat the Filipino team.
“It was a well-deserved victory for them (Vietnamese),” Philippine coach Michael Weiss admitted later. “We were a little bit unlucky (because of the own goal) despite a brilliant, brilliant job by our keeper.”
The Azkals will next face Timor Leste in their group and have high hopes of making it to the next round. The Pinoys now have to sweep their remaining games to reach the Final Four. Other countries in their bracket are Myanmar, Brunei and Laos.
