Oprah: “Miss Philippines deserved to win” Miss Universe 2011

“I have reservations with the results. If the only basis is the Q and A portion, after having been trimmed down to 5, Ms. Philippines deserved to win. What made her different from the rest is that she had no seconds to rethink of her answer as she had no interpreter to break the ice. The rest had their interpreters and having breaks on seconds to think about their answers. Hands down, Ms. Philippines answered straight to the point.”
Several reports, including the Manila Standard, have since ‘verified’ the remark as coming from Oprah although this writer still cannot find the original source.
Coming from Oprah or not, the remark is a valid observation of the Miss Universe process of choosing its winner. I believe that the question and answer portion of the competition is there to test the wit, grace under pressure and spontaneity of a contestant. This is because throughout her reign, Miss Universe will meet and talk to all kinds of people. Miss Universe will also participate is various fora and be questioned about issues that affect all of us daily. As such, she is expected to have a good head on her shoulders and be very articulate.
Shamcey Supsup, Miss Philippines, displayed, to my mind, these qualities the best. While the rest of the Top 5 spoke eloquently as well, they had the advantage of more time to think about their answers as the judge asks the question through the interpreter. This is one of the tricks of the trade, much like calling a trainer during a crucial match in tennis to possibly change the momentum of the match. Most, if not all, of the finalists understood their question. However, they may not have been confident enough to answer it in English as Shamcey did.
As Oprah reportedly stated, Shamcey deserved to win IF the result of the competition was based on the Q&A alone. However, we all know it is not. From the moment the 16 finalists were called on stage at the start of the pageant, the finals judges started judging the girls based on the Miss Universe criteria and their personal preferences. The Miss Universe winner is thus the collective result of this whole process.
UPDATE: The comment attributed to Oprah has been confirmed to be a hoax. A moderator at Oprah.com has this to say when a reader asked if it s true Oprah made such a remark: “There is no truth to the statement. Ms. Winfrey has not made any comments of this nature. “

no you’re wrong philippines deserve to win the miss universe because for me q & a portion is important she don’t even use an interpreter and she answered sraightly for ms yah and dale
That’s the point, she was politically incorrect . Afterall she is trying to win the ms. Universe title . Your answer should be universal. Nobody have to change one’s beliefs to marry the man she loves. We all know that. she gave the wrong answer. she said she will NOT marry the man she loves if she will have to change her relgious beliefs. Then in the end she said something abt forcing her beliefs on the person who loves her… ( b..ch) It Got worstt…Too Late Jose, you already said you are not going to marry him. XXX a good answer would be – i will still marry the man i love but i will not change my religious beliefs for him and i will not force my beliefs on him. i will respect his beliefs and he should respect mine if he loves me.
you are lucky that your marriage last forever dale bec you both have the same religion but i have friends who have longer marriage than yours. she’s a catholic and he’s a muslim. it just goes to show that you can marry the man you love without changing your religion. you have love n respect for each other. My father changed his religion for my mother. That’s how much my father loves my mother and her religion. Bottomline is you still marry the person you love irregardless of their religious beliefs, race etc….. She might as well be a spinster because there is no perfect marriage. There will be disagreements no matter what. Better yet, just be a nun.
that kind of mentality could start a war, that’s what i meant, an extremist.
It’s Yah if you marry the person you’ll love and you have the same religion. It’s sad if you stay married beCause of religion and not because you love the person.
For Consolation- she gave an honest answer . she was true to herself and fanatic to her religion.
Miss Philippines no doubt gave the best answer. Perhaps it was not politically correct, but it was her conviction, and good advice. As far as “yah’s” comment that it is conservative and could start a war, that is baloney. Who would marry a man who would “force” them to change there religion? They did not ask if she would marry someone of another religion who would tolerate her faith, but if she would marry under requirement of changing her own faith…something obviously more important than an earthly relationship and potentially a source of conflict throughout her lifetime if so “unequally yolked” and forced to worship another god she does not believe in. It would be foolish for anyone to marry in those circumstances. While some marriages of mixed faith work if neither partner is very devout, usually the children turn out with no religious belief as neither partner practices their faith actively. Where one is devout, the other is pushed into converting. I married a woman of another nationality, culture, and race, but we had a common faith…this is the only way our marriage has lasted in modern American society for nearly 25 years, and will for life, God help us. I have friends of many faiths, and I respect them ans they do me, and we enjoy comparing and discussing our faiths, but even those with monotheistic beliefs do not necessarily worship the same God that I do. Yes I am narrow-minded, but there is only one truth, and it is not hard to find that straight, narrow path if you look for it and ask God to reveal it to you. The curvy road to Hell is paved with distortions, lies, and universalism….the kind of new age stuff Oprah pushes! Been there, done that.
ok at first i thought ms phils should win but the more i think about it, ms angola deserves the crown. ms. phils’s answer was an answer that can cause a religious war. it’s a conservative view and it’s not universal view. you can still marry and love a person in a different religion as long as you respect each others beliefs and GOd. if you’re inlove , fuck principles right? she’s not realistic. i hope she falls in love with a man who is not in her same religion and she will find out for herself. ms angola and ms phils ‘s questions are not easy. in this age of cosmetic surgery, yah ms angola’s question was hard. she gave a good answer but only because she’s lucky to be born with it.
My bet is also Miss Philippines of course. All of them are beautiful and sexy but we have nothing to do with the result, and that is final.
