The son of a wealthy Nigerian banker, the ‘underwear bomber’ boarded a Northwest Airlines plane in December 2009 in Amsterdam and headed to Detroit in the USA. Minutes before the plane landed, Abdulmutallab tried to detonate the bomb in his underwear but it failed to explode only causing a fire that burned his groin. He was subdued by passengers and held down until the plane landed in Detroit where he was immediately arrested.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab admitted he was on a suicide mission for Al Qaeda and that the bomb in his underwear was a ‘blessed weapon’ aimed at avenging the treatment of Muslims around the world.
