LPG, Water Rates Increases Announced as 2012 Begins
More burden for consumers as the prices of water and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), aka cooking fuel, are increased at the start of the new year. This on top of the increase in gasoline and diesel that was announced by Pilipinas Shell earlier. Other oil retailers are expected to follow suit.
Maynilad and Manila Water have announced rate increases. Maynilad Water Services Inc. and Manila Water Co. Inc. have announced that they have increased the average basic charge by P2.49 and P2.18 per cubic meter, respectively, this month. The water rate increase is in line with the water utilities’ approved annual rate increase.
Meanwhile, LPG has increased by P3.00 per kilogram. This according to small player Regasco which announced the price increase. According to Regasco, the increase is in line with higher contract prices fro January. And if you think you won’t be affected because you don’t use Regasco, think again.
LPG Marketers Association (LPGMA) Partylist Rep. Arnel Ty said all LPG suppliers are bound to increase prices after an $82 jump in international contract prices last December 31. That is just too big for a supplier to absorb and will have to pass it to consumers. Suppliers estimate that the total increase will be around P4.50 per kilogram, which means that the Regasco increase was just the first phase.
