London Olympics 2012: The Queen to Light Olympic Flame?
With only six months left until the opening of the 2012 London Olympics, preparations are in full swing. One highly-anticipated event will be the opening ceremony and the lighting of the Olympic flame. The lighting of the flame is the highlight of the opening event and who will light the flame is a closely guarded secret. Who will light the London Olympics flame?
Bookmakers in the United Kingdom have started to take in bets on who will light the Olympic flame. Currently topping the list is Steve Redgrave, a five-time gold medalist. Others on the list are Olympians Kelly Holmes, Daley Thompson and Tom Daley as well as other well-known British athletes like David Beckham, Sebastian Coe and Roger Bannister. But one name oddly stands out – Queen Elizabeth II! That’s right, Britons are actually betting that the Queen will light the Olympic flame in London.
Come to think of it, it’s not really a far-fetched idea. With Queen Elizabeth II celebrating her Diamond Jubilee this year, she may be given the honor of lighting the Olympic flame. What do you think?
Another highly-anticipated part of the London Olympics 2012 opening ceremony is how the Olympic flame is to be lighted. There have been many unforgetabble ways this has been done – from Li Ning’s ‘walk on air’ at the 2008 Beijing Olympics to Cathy Freeman’s rising cauldron in Sydney. But the best so far has been the flaming arrow in Barcelona 1992 courtesy of Paralympic archer Antonio Rebollo. Can London top it?
