London 2012 Olympic Medals Revealed (PHOTOS, Video)
As has been tradition, except for the Paris Olympics in 1900 when the medals were rectangular, the London Olympic medals are circular and bear the official logo of the host Olympiad. This this case, it is the abstract London Olympics Games 2012 logo seen engraved on the reverse side. The 2012 London Logo is distinctly embossed at the center of the medal over crisscrossing lines symbolizing energy radiating out from the city.
On the front side of the 12012 Olympics medal is the Greek goddess Nike, firmly engraved at the center, the symbol of victory and embodiment of the spirit of the Games.
But what is most notable about the 2012 London Olympic Games medals is its size. Measuring 85 mm is diameter, the medals are bigger than previous editions, and heavier as well. Weighing in at 400 grams, it is the heaviest of any Summer Games. However, gold medal winners will be disappointed to find out that their medals are actually 92.5 percent silver and contain just 1.34 percent gold.
The medals, designed by British designer David Watkins, will go into production laster this year. Over 2100 medals will be produced to be given out in 302 victory ceremonies at next year’s London 2012 Olympics. (VIDEO CREDIT: YouTube/BBC)
