Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s super… cockroach? A new kind of cockroach as been discovered – a leaproach. What is a leaproach? A leaproach, as the name suggests, is a jumping cockroach, aka Saltoblattella Montistabularis, which can reportedly jump 48 times the length of its body. The jumping cockroach gets its ability through its powerful hind legs that can propel it through the air. With the help of its antenna, the leaproach then balances itself while airborne allowing it to ‘sail’ longer.
The leaproach was discovered earlier this year by Mike Picker, a zoologist at the University of Cape Town. The discovery was made by the team as it was looking for fly larvae in the Table Mountain nature reserve. It apparently thrives in grasslands and feeds on grasshopper excrement 9maybe this is one reason why it can that that way).
“I noticed these very strange jumping animals, which I initially thought might be a type of grasshopper. But knowing the insects quite well, we soon realized what a spectacular find we had,” Mike Picker told CBC Radio.
According to the National Geographic, the discovery of the leaproach is significant because the last existing jumping cockroach lived in prehistoric times. (VIDEO CREDIT: YouTube)
