Everybody was saying Maria Sharapova would win Wimbledon this year after the top seeds fell one after the other as Wimbledon 2011 progressed. And especially after the Williams sisters were defeated (her arch nemeses), Sharapova was crowned even before the semifinals. The two had only met once previously with Sharapova emerging victor in straight sets last year. But Kvitova has improved by leaps and bounds since then. And she surprised Maria today on Centre Court.
Petra Kvitova managed to consistently break Sharapova, throwing the match off-balance. The left-handed Czech was able to consistently push Sharapova into corners forcing her to stretch and make weak returns. That’s was when Kvitova pounced on the ball across the net into corners or down the line with almost pinpoint accuracy. Her backhand was amazing today, one of the weapons Maria Sharapova found hard to deal with.
Petra Kvitova. Remember her name. She may just well be the next star of women’s tennis, the force that the WTA circuit needs to inject excitement into the game. Because today, watched by two former Wimbledon champions from Czechoslovakia – Martina Navratilova and Jana Novotna, Petra Kvitova showed us what she is capable of. (VIDEO CREDIT: BBC/YouTube)
