A UFO-shaped object being transported on a flatbed truck got a lot of attention from Cowley County, Kansas residents. Was it a UFO? Was the military transporting an unidentified flying object through Kansas? The object was huge and, according to reports, it was so big that police had to remove road signs so that it can turn a corner! The residents could not stop talking about it and soon, the topic spilled over the internet.
‘Kansas Flatbed UFO’, ‘Kansas UFO’ and ‘UFO on a Flatbed’ were soon popular search terms online. It was a flying object alright but, it turned out, it was not extra terrestrial. The ‘UFO on a flatbed’ was a military drone, one of two X-47B drones designed by Northrop Grumman being shipped from California to Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland.
The X-47B is a tailless, strike fighter-sized unmanned aircraft currently under development by Northrop Grumman as part of the U.S. Navy’s Unmanned Combat Air System Carrier Demonstration (UCAS-D) program. Under a contract awarded in 2007, the company designed, produced and is currently flight testing two X-47B aircraft. In 2013, these aircraft will be used to demonstrate the first carrier-based launches and recoveries by an autonomous, low-observable-relevant unmanned aircraft. The UCAS-D program will also mature relevant carrier landing and integration technologies, and demonstrate, in 2014, autonomous aerial refueling by the X-47B aircraft.
