Any Barcelona vs Real Madrid match is tension-filled. Regarded are two of the best football clubs on the planet, the two Spanish sides have been bitterly fighting for supremacy for years. And this 2011 Spanish Supercup meeting was equally tension-filled as Barcelona attempted to win it for the third straight time and Real Madrid trying desperately to stop it. What probably makes matters worse for Real is its seeminbg frustration in stopping Barcelona over the last few years, Lionel Messi in particular.
The Argentinian striker has been a thorn on Real Madrid’s side ever since he joined Barcelona. And second leg Spanish Spercup match demonstrates just how he punished Madrid. Lionel Messi scored two goals and was instrumental in the third and REal’s players seemed helpless and frustrated in finding the formula to stop him.
In injury time, the tension erupted after Marcelo challenged Cesc Fabregas. Soon after, players from both sides pushed and shoved each other on the pitch and it took officials several minutes and three red cars to separate them. However, the uglier incident was courtesy of Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho. He joined the melee and poked the eye of Barca’s assistant coach, Tito Vilanova.
Mourinho was already sanctioned this year after after alleging Barcelona received favorable treatment from referees and UEFA. Now, there are calls for harsher sanctions against the Real Madrid manager. (VIDEO Credit: YouTube)
