Sweden was the favorite to win over Japan in this semifinal match. The Swedes, after all, were runners up in the last Women’s World Cup. Sweden opened the scoring when Oqvist found the net in just 10 minutes of play. But the Japanese women displayed brilliant play and control and displayed the form they vanquished Germany with in the quarterfinals.
Nahomi Kawasumi equalized for Japan in the 19th minute and that’s how the score stood after the first half. Japan again displayed their brilliant form in the second half to prove that their win over Germany was no fluke. After Homare Sawa stunned Sweden with Japan’s second goal in the 60th minute, Kawasumi posted a third goal four minutes later to further bury the Swedes. (VIDEO CREDIT: FIFA/ESPN/YouTube)
