“The International Olympic Committee has the honor of announcing that the 23rd Olympic Winter Games in 2018 are awarded to the city of Pyeongchang,” announced IOC president Jacques Rogge as he opened the sealed envelop containing the decision, after which the South Korean delegates erupted in cheers.
Hundreds of miles away in the city of PyeongChang, celebrations erupted as the announcement is made. Several hundred locals gathered at a stadium to watch the announcement live via a giant video screen.
The South Korean Olympic bid victory followed the IOC’s trend in recent votes, having taken the Winter Games to Russia (Sochi) for the first time in 2014 and giving South America its first Olympics with the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro. (VIDEO CREDIT: YouTube/RT)
