Victoria Azarenka started sharply against Kim Clijsters, winning the opening set. However, the momentum changed after Azarenka’s loss of focus in the second which Clijster took advantage of. However, there’s no denying the young Belarusian as she didn’t waste the opportunity to advance to the final.
In the second women’s singles semifinal match, Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova engaged in a gritty battle for a finals slot. Billed as a revenge match after Kvitova beat Sharapova in the Wimbledon 2011 finals, the two women came out firing from the get go. Petra Kvitova had all the ammunition to win the match. However, careless mistakes, unforced errors and bad judgement shots led to her downfall. She squandered several break point opportunities in the final set to hand Sharapova the victory.
There one more thing at stake in the Australian Open 2012 women’s singles final aside from the title and the cash prize – the world number 1 ranking. Whoever wins the title will be the new world number 1. (VIDEO CREDIT: YouTube/Australian Open)
