2011 Geminids Meteor Shower Peak Tonight, December 14
Watch the Geminids meteor shower tonight. According to astronomers, the 2011 Geminids meteor shower will peak tonight, December 14th, with a spectacular display of lights just three days after the total lunar eclipse. Locally, the meteors will be visible as early as 9:30 PM and will continue until the early hours of Thursday.
The Geminids are an annual event. Unlike other meteor showers, the Greminids are brighter and move slower allowing viewers more opportunity to watch them in the night sky. Scientists believe Geminids come from a mysterious object known as 3200 Phaethon, an asteroid that has the closest known orbit to the sun.The phenomenon is referred to as the Geminids because they appear to radiate from the constellation Gemini, the Twins.
The meteor shower, visible to the naked eye, could be observed initially in the eastern sky, then overhead, and in the western sky. To get a better view of the meteor shower, astronomers advice viewers to go to an area that is relatively dark, preferably away from the city lights.
