French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde Next IMF Chief: Report
The post of IMF chief has traditionally gone to Europeans, something many in other parts of the world hope to change with this vote. Calls for a non-European IMF head had been made after Dominique Strauss-Kahn resigned last month. However, if it is true that Christine Lagarde has the backing for the United States and Japan, it is all but certain that she will have the post. The United States and Europe account for 48% of the vote with Japan having 6%. If Europe backs Lagarde solidly in this campaign, which is what is expected to happen, then she has the IMF Chief position in the bag.
Mexican central bank governor Agustin Carstens is also nominated for the position but he is seen as a long shot.
The IMF head position became vacant after the resignation of Dominique Strauss-Kahn last month amid allegations that he s*xually attacked a chamber maid in a New York Hotel. Strauss-Kahn is currently under house arrest in the United States pending the start of his trial.
