The Philippines had already beaten Japan in the second round of the tournament and most were expecting the same result today. However, Japan used a similar zone defense against the Filipinos that, one night earlier, Korea proved successful. It turned out to be another success as the Japanese erected a 20-point lead at the end of the third quarter after a close first and second quarters.
Energen Pilipinas finishes the tournament in 4th place, behind finalists China and Korea, and Japan. The ranking matches the country’s finish in the 1st FIBA Asia Under-16 Championships held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia two years ago.
In the finals, China defeated Korea, 92-52, as expected to successfully defend their FIBA Asia Boys’ Under 16 Championship.
