Just like in the ladies final, almost everybody predicted a different outcome. Rafael Nadal was the heavy favorite to lift his third Wimbledon championship trophy and 11th Grand Slam tournament victory. Never mind if Djokovic had beaten him four times already this year in four separate finals encounters. Never mind if Djokovic has an almost unblemished record in tennis since the start of the season, his only defeat coming from Roger Federer in the French Open semis. Never mind if Novak Djokovic had already claimed the world number 1 ranking in the Wimbledon semifinal. Many still predicted Nadal would win. But Djokovic silenced all of his doubters today.
It was a masterful display of tennis from the Serbian champion. In his first Wimbledon finals ever, and watched by no less than the president of Serbia, Novak Djokovic showed us why he has dominated Rafael Nadal so far this season. He neutralizes the Spaniard’s power with with well-placed shots and his own powerful forehands. And he carefully plays other points waiting for Nadal to commit the errors.
The second set was brilliant display of tennis from the new Wimbledon champion. Winning 6-1 in just 32 minutes, Novak surprised many of Nadal’s fans with the outcome. Nobody would have thought the defending champion could be so dominated in a Wimbledon final. Though Nadal bounced back in third set with a 6-1 victory of his own, history was already against him after going down two sets to love in a Wimbledon men’s final. The last time anyone came back from such a deficit was in 1927!
When it was all over, Novak Djokovic collapsed in the grass, unbleieving. Afterward, he returned, clipped a few pieces of grass from Centre Court, and ate them. (VIDEO CREDIT: BBC/YouTube)
