Darren Clarke Wins 2011 British Open: Another Irish Wins a Major!

Rory McIlroy, the heavy favorite before the tournament began after dominating the US Open, never got it going at Royal St. George, closing with a 3-over 73 and a 7-over 287 total. “I’m not a fan of golf tournaments where the outcome is predicted so much by the weather,’ he said. “It’s not my sort of golf. Yeah, I’m disappointed with the way I finished, obviously, but I’ll just have to wait until next year to try and make a run at this tournament.
Meanwhile, two Americans challenged Darren Clarke on this final round. Phil Mickelson, who has never done well at the British Open, and Dustin Johnson put up encouraging results at the beginning of the round only to fade in the end. And with Johnson, it was another blunder at a major in the final round – two stroke off the lead, Johnson knocked an iron shot out of bounds from the 14th fairway and wound up with a double-bogey.
