China & Russia Veto UN Security Council Resolution on Syria
The UN Security Council vote comes after reports of renewed violence in Syria where more than 200 people have been killed. Syrian military forces have reportedly opened fire on restive neighborhoods killing many of its residents. According to media reports, it was the bloodiest episode yet in the 11-month uprising against the Syrian government. The United Nation says more than 5,400 have already lost their lives since the Syrian government began its crackdown on protests.
In the United States, President Barack Obama said Assad had displayed “disdain for human life and dignity” after the attack on Homs. “The Syrian regime’s policy of maintaining power by terrorizing its people only indicates its inherent weakness and inevitable collapse,” Obama said. “Assad has no right to lead Syria, and has lost all legitimacy with his people and the international community.”
