Cadel Evans, and many of his supporter, thought he again lost his chance of winning the Tour de France this year. Though the Australian has kept with the pace of the race, Andy Schleck threw the gauntlet on everyone when he pulled away on the Galibier pass. However, Evans did not give up. After winning the time trial in the penultimate stage of the race, the Tour de France 2011 victory was his.
Cadel Evans has already won the race before the final stage to the Champs Elysee. The the race was not over yet, the last stage has traditionally been purely ceremonial, a victory lap of sorts for the overall leader at the second to the last stage. Thus, Evans rode to victory in the main pack as he entered Paris yesterday.
The win makes Cadel Evans the oldest champion since World War II. The all-time record was set by 36-year-old Firmin Lambot of Belgium – in 1922.
Coming in second and third overall were the Schleck brothers, Andy and Frank, respectively. (VIDEO CREDIT: YouTube)
