‘Billion Euro Home’: Irish Artist Builds House Made of Money (VIDEO)
“It’s a reflection of the whole madness that gripped us. People were pouring billions into buildings now worth nothing. I wanted to create something from nothing.”
When Ireland joined the currency zone in the early 2000s, cheap credit was available to everyone, even to those who could not even afford it. Buckley himself was able to buy a house worth 365,000 Euros even though he had no steady job. That was how easy it was to get cheap credit. As a result, there was a property boom in Ireland. But that bubble burst in 2007 leaving buildings now worth a fraction of their original value.
Frank Buckley’s ‘billion Euro home’ was put up inside the lobby of an empty building built during the property bubble. He has lived in the house since December after separating from his wife. The walls are covered with Euro shreddings that insulate the house perfectly. In fact, Buckley even sleeps without a blanket.
“Whatever you say about the euro, it’s a great insulator.” (via Yahoo)
