Both Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka were gunning for the world number 1 ranking. After Caroline Wizniacki’s defeat to Kim Clijsters in the quarterfinals, the door was left open for three women to take her spot – Azarenka, Sharapova and Petra Kvitova. However, Kvitova’s defeat at the hands of Sharapova in the semis took her out of the running leaving the two finalists to battle it out not only for the Australian Open title and the $2.3 million winner’s check, but for the word number 1 ranking.
Victoria Azarenka started shakily, giving up a service break in the first game of the match. However, she bounced back immediately to take the first set. Ozzing with confidence and controlling her emotions, Azarenka then proceeded to blank her more famous opponent to claim her first ever Grand Slam title. (VIDEO CREDIT: YouTube/Australian Open)
