Rafael Nadal defeated Lukas Larko of Slovakia 6–2, 6–4, 6–2 while Roger Federer beat Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 7–6(8–6), 7–5, 6–3. Meanwhile, women’s defending champion Kim Clijsters overpowered former women’s top 10 Daniela Hantuchova 6–3, 6–2.
Several seeded players were booted out of the Australian Open on Day 5: Alexandr Dolgopolov [13], John Isner [16], Stanislas Wawrinka [21], Kevin Anderson [30], Daniela Hantuchová [20], Anabel Medina Garrigues [26] and Monica Niculescu [31].
