“Leading international sports events, such as Wimbledon, are all about the quality of the players on show,” All England Club chairman Philip Brook said. “It is important that we offer prize money which suitably rewards the players both for the box office appeal they bring to the event and for their supreme performances on court.” The French Open has also announced an increase in its prize money.
Defending champions in this year’s tournament are Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams. Nadal is set to defend his crown on the grass courts of Wimbledon but organizers say they have yet to hear from Serena. She has been inactive from competitive tennis since winning Wimbledon last year because of complications following two foot surgeries.
